Initiated in 2005 by the Ministry of Education, together with the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the Expertise-Introduction Project for Disciplinary Innovation of Universities,E also known as the '111 Project' in China, is a national programme that aims to draw 'about 1000 leading overseas scholars and researchers from the top 100 world leading universities and research institutest to build '100 innovative bases for disciplinary development and research' in China (1000-100-100, thus the nickname '111 project'). The Hazard and Risk Science Base (HRSB)H at the Beijing Normal University is one of such 111 projects. Started in January 2008, the HRSB is now in its second phase of implementation (2013 2017). The series of summer institute for disaster and risk research is an integral part and a core capacity building activity of the Hazard and Risk Science Base at Beijing Normal University.
